…happy, passionate

 and ocean child

This is me

If one should describe me with a few words only, it is probably happy, passionate and ocean child. Ever since I can remember the ocean played an important role in my life. To me being at the sea or at the beach has something calming for the soul. So it was no wonder that I wanted to learn sailing at the age of five. Started with the optimist and then switched into the Europe dinghy which I still love to sail and compete in. Sailing truly made me to the person I am today. It taught me to work for my goals and stay focused on the things that matter.

But time also makes you try new things. Loyal to water sports, I started to learn windsurfing this year. In fact, I always wanted to attempt this, but never found time. Year 2020 was different - harbors were locked in Kiel until May and I was so eager and desperate to get onto the water. So we organized some windsurf material for me to try and I really like it. So now I am using my winter sailing break to improve my windsurfing - fingers crossed no hard winter will hit!

Nevertheless, the ocean is not only my playground - the ocean is also kind of my place to work. I did my B. Sc. in Physics of the Earth System with a focus on physical oceanography, climate science and meteorology. In September 2019 I finished my Master in Climate Physics with honor where I wrote my thesis about observed heat content variability in the tropical Atlantic.

I love science and I am very keen to do climate research in the ocean. In fact, I enjoy programming - despite some moments of desperation when you are stuck - I mean it is amazing to see what you can get out of a few variables like e.g. temperature, salinity and pressure.

I am very happy that I was allowed to start my doctoral research at GEOMAR in Kiel in March 2020. My work is now dealing with physical processes in the tropical Atlantic Ocean and how they change due to climate variability and climate change. Climate change is such an important topic that accounts all of us. Researchers still do not know what is going to happen in detail when global temperatures continue to rise, and as the warming increases more and more, it is of great importance to study the dynamical impacts in specific regions.

With this blog I want to give you some insights about my love to the ocean in all kind of ways - the sport and the physics. :)
